Why build benches for bus stops?

• There are over 4200 bus stops in the region without a bench (source). 
• This lack of seating reduces the overall quality of a transit riding experience.
• This hits our most vulnerable transit riders especially hard:

• This is of course not the only problem, or even the biggest problem with our transit system. While we strongly advocate for other improvements such as increased bus frequency, dedicated lanes, and signal priority, these problems are far too big and expensive to be directly solved by a community group of our size.
  
• Building bus benches is different-- we can construct and install a bus bench for under $25 in materials. As a result, we can easily scale our bench building efforts to provide meaningful improvements for transit users at high-ridership bus stops across the region.

What have we done so far?

• Our group’s first bench was installed at Kingshighway @ Magnolia NB in 2023.
• Since then, we’ve installed over 80 benches across the city and county.
• We have inspired other individuals and outside organizations to deploy their own benches at stops, and we know of at least 11 such instances.

How you can help:

Join us at one of our events.

• We have bench painting events for those who are artists, and woodworking/construction events for those who like working with their hands. Follow our Meetup and Newsletter for whenever we announce new events.

Donate supplies.

• We are in most need of paint, 2x4s, and access to trucks for transportation. Send us a message in the Discord server or email if you have these.

Help us maintain our existing benches.

• We need people to check in our already deployed benches to make sure they are still in good condition. If you ever find a broken bench, please make a report so we can send somebody out to fix it.
